Job Purpose

With generous support from the A. G. Leventis Foundation, the School of History, Classics and Archaeology at the University of Edinburgh is pleased to invite applications for an open-ended Lectureship/Senior Lectureship in Modern Greek Studies. The post represents an exciting expansion of the School’s research and teaching agenda into Modern Greek Studies, which will be further supported by the creation of an equally open-ended Teaching Fellowship in Modern Greek Language and Literature (in whose appointment the future holder of this post will be involved).

Applications are welcome from specialists in any area of Greek history, literature or culture from 1453 to the present. The postholder will maintain close relations with the Departments of Classics and History and, together with the soon-to-be-appointed Teaching Fellow, play a key role in developing a new focus on Modern Greek Studies comprising of attractive specialised modules as well as potentially, in due course, new degree options/specialisations for students from across the School and the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. The candidate will pursue an active research agenda ideally drawing on existing strengths and synergies in the School, such as ancient Greek and Byzantine history, literature and culture; classical reception studies; early modern and modern intellectual and/or political history including the history of revolutions or of dictatorships in the twentieth century; diaspora studies; etc., and/or College, e.g. European studies, modern languages, comparative/transnational literary, film and cultural studies, history of art, etc. They will be expected to recruit and supervise doctoral students and contribute to building up a research culture in the field.

Main responsibilities

1) To pursue independent and original research and develop a portfolio of internationally excellent research publications, develop knowledge exchange and impact activity, and develop external funding proposals as appropriate, to meet the research objectives of the School of History, Classics and Archaeology (approx. 40% of the time) 2 February 2022

2) Provide high quality teaching and supervision at all levels, including developing research-led courses for honours and postgraduate students in an area of Modern Greek Studies, as well as undertaking dissertation supervision and doctoral supervision, to meet the teaching objectives of the School (approx. 40% of the time)

3) Undertake leadership and administrative duties within Classics and within the School, as specified by the Head of Classics or Head of School (approx. 20% of the time).

Planning & Organising

• Deliver pre-honours, honours and postgraduate teaching and supervision of undergraduate and Masters dissertations, as directed by Head of Classics.
• Plan, pursue and publish scholarly research and engage in other scholarly activities including making funding applications.
• Plan and carry out supervision and training of doctoral students as required.
• Plan and carry out administrative roles as required.

Problem Solving

• Solve problems relating to own research, including seeking out appropriate external resources.

• Respond to feedback on teaching and assessment through changes in course design and course content as appropriate.
• Work with academic colleagues and the Student Support and Experience Team to assist students who encounter difficulties in their studies.

• Develop appropriate responses to problems or issues that arise in respect of administrative roles.

Decision Making

• Decide on an appropriate strategy to develop a focus on Modern Greek Studies initially within existing structures in the School of History, Classics & Archaeology.

• Decide on an appropriate research strategy and on how best to implement this, including selecting appropriate means and output locations for publishing research findings and deciding on how best to seek out external funding and/or opportunities for public impact.
• Decide on appropriate teaching material for courses at various levels and how best to present this material to students and how it is best assessed.
