INALCO: Teaching and Research Modern Greek language and linguistics

Job title: Modern Greek language and linguistics

Teaching:

The candidate, who is expected to have an excellent command of Modern Greek (MG), will teach fundamental courses in theoretical and practical grammar and MG linguistics, at Bachelor (L1, L2, L3) and Master 1 & 2 levels, in coordination with the other courses taught in the “Language” unit (texts and written practice, oral practice of MG).
They will need to demonstrate a sound knowledge of theoretical work in Greek linguistics in order to apply it to their teaching and enable students to acquire the mechanisms of the MG language.
The profile of this position is twofold.
In teaching grammar, the key areas (phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax) should be addressed with a pedagogical approach adapted to the needs of the learners, with the aim of understanding and mastering the language system.
The teaching of modern Greek linguistics, which complements that of grammar, will focus on the structures of the language and how they function, through the study of central issues such as sentence organization, the particularities of the nominal and verbal, aspectual and modal systems, and discourse analysis. These topics will be the subject of in-depth study based on a variety of textual sources (oral and written), representative of the modern Greek language in all its complexity and dynamics.
Linguistic teaching skills will also be put to good use in the course on the history of the Greek language, as well as in the collective seminar on the linguistics of balkanic languages, focusing on the question of language contacts, in which the recruited senior lecturer will be expected to participate.
In this context, experience in teaching GM language and grammar to foreign students, as demonstrated by academic work and/or previous teaching experience, will be appreciated.
The recruited senior lecturer will organize their teaching project in line with the orientations of the Modern Greek team, with whom they will be expected to demonstrate, from the outset, their ability to collaborate. They will be required to suggest changes to the curriculum in their field of expertise.
They will also be expected to contribute to the development of teaching tools, including digital ones, as part of the projects currently being developed at the school. In this respect, competence in the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) is desirable.
They will be able to carry out part of their assignments in the department’s regional courses or in cross-disciplinary courses at INALCO’s bachelor and master levels.

Research:

SeDyL
UMR 8202 SeDyL supports the recruitment of a senior lecturer for the position of “Modern Greek Language and Linguistics”.
With regard to the profile of the post being advertised, it is worth mentioning the applied aspect of the laboratory’s project and its pedagogical aim, particularly in the teaching of languages far removed from French, such as Modern Greek. Description and analysis work, carried out as closely as possible to the specific data of the language and giving a central place to reflection on the fundamentals of grammatical categorization (often inspired by the grammars and syntaxes of ancient Greek) and transcategorial phenomena, are intended to ultimately lead to the development of new pedagogical tools.
With this in mind, the SeDyL supports the recruitment of a candidate whose work will focus on a detailed description of Modern Greek data (including from a diachronic perspective), taking into account the interferences between different levels of analysis (morphology, syntax, semantics) , as well as processes ensuring the integration of the statement in various contexts, an essential area for both research and teaching.
Recruitment to this position would also support the Balkan linguistic area, as research in modern Greek linguistics is also part of this real linguistics network, both in research and teaching (collective seminar, M1). The research carried out in this extended field, apart from its own interest, will contribute to renewing methods in the comparative approach, which is essential in the laboratory’s work, and to innovatively feeding this training program into INALCO’s pedagogical offering.

CREE
The Center for Europes-Eurasia Research (CREE) fully supports the recruitment of a senior lecturer of Modern Greek Language and Linguistics.
CREE is looking for a specialist in linguistics (semantics, morphology, syntax) or sociolinguistics, whose work fits naturally into the “Production, diffusion, patrimonialization of cultural goods and shared linguistic diversity” axis of the 2025-2029 project.
Practical applications arising from the candidate’s theoretical work could include the development of pedagogical tools for learning Greek, the creation of grammars or dictionaries, and the automatic processing of modern Greek.
The ability to collaborate with specialists from linguistic areas other than Greek (particularly in the field of contact languages, of particular interest to the team) or from other disciplines present within CREE (translatology, literature, anthropology, sociology, etc.) would be highly appreciated when evaluating applications.
