Call for papers: Comparative linguistic approaches to Modern Greek 2

This second international conference is a continuation of the conference Approches linguistiques comparatives grec moderne-français which has been organized in partnership by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the National Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilizations (INALCO, Paris) and the UMR Sedyl, on the 30th and 31st of October 2020. The proceedings of that conference have been published in 2022 by the NKUA Press and are available on the following site:

This year’s conference Comparative linguistic approaches to Modern Greek 2 aims to bring together linguists with expertise in the field of comparative linguistic approaches between Modern Greek (MG) and languages such as Romance, Slavic, Balkan, Semitic, Turkic and others. The recent renewal of the comparative field, both theoretically and methodologically, is favored by new resources that allow linguists to work in a more in-depth and reliable manner on the data (large electronic corpora, informatics, interlanguage corpora, etc.). This field, considered a priori as a branch of applied linguistics, benefits from its interaction with a plurality of areas of theoretical linguistics which have themselves undergone significant developments (see, for instance, linguistic typology, discourse analysis, language contact linguistics, psycholinguistics and language acquisition, cognitive linguistics and studies on the mental lexicon). This development provided a more solid methodological basis for this field of research that surpasses the mere theoretical comparison between two languages.

The second edition of the conference aims to take stock of the most recent advances in this comparative field with an opening towards studies that share the abovementioned vein of reasoning and belong to the following fields :

-critical sociolinguistics (sociolinguistics of language practice, gender related studies),
-language contact linguistics and multilingualism,
-critical discourse analysis and the development of tools for language teaching.

The opening towards these fields does not exclude papers on comparative linguistic approaches to Modern Greek that aim to study other linguistic phenomena such as those studied in the first edition of the conference:
– mode and modality
– negation and question
– morphology/phonetics/phonology and syntax interface
– syntax/semantics interface
– formal semantics
– syntax and text linguistics
– discourse particles
– determination, (in)definites, quantification, degree modifiers
– translation

This second meeting which, unlike the first will be held “in person” will also serve to establish an academic network of colleagues, departments, research laboratories, institutes that aim to continue these exchanges in the form of conferences of regular events organized by its members.

We invite original contributions with novel data that have not been published elsewhere. This conference organized in partnership by the Sedyl laboratory (UMR 8202, INALCO-CNRS, IRD), the Department of French Language and Literature of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the UR GEO-1340 of the University of Strasbourg will take place at the INALCO, Paris, France, on the 13th and the 14th of September 2024.

Abstracts (500-600 words max. references included) should be sent by the 15th of April 2024 to the following e-mail address: applingcompgm.2@gmail.com

Authors will be informed of the acceptance of their proposals by the middle of May 2024.
