Two plays are the main focus of this book translated into italian: Ο Φυλάργυρος (L’Avaro) by Elisavet Mutzan-Martinengu and Ο Βασιλικός (Il Basilico) by Antonio Matesis. The first play was written between 1823 and 1824. This drama is one of the few surviving works by the prolific writer, who was inspired by models such as Molière and Goldoni’s “serious” comedy, but stands out for its realism and social criticism. The second work, Il Basilico, was written between 1829 and 1830 and published in 1859, it is considered a turning point for modern Greek theatre. Set in 1712, the play intertwines a family drama with a broader social and ideological conflict. Through the conflict between the despotic aristocratic father and his progressive son, the play criticises feudal oppression and promotes the Enlightenment ideals of justice and individual freedom. The volume also includes a note from the author discussing his dramaturgical choices.
