A celebration of the Nobel Prize winner
Presented under the auspices of the H. R. President of the Hellenic Republic Mr. Prokopios Pavlopoulos.
The bold, lyrical work of poet Odysseus Elytis (1911–1996) is brought to life in readings and song, with live music by one of the most outstanding living Greek composers, George Couroupos, written to accompany a new multilingual anthology of his poetry and prose (Ikaros Publishing 2016) and performed by a live piano quartet.
Elytis’ expressive poetry captures the ‘small and great’ spirit of the Greek landscape. In awarding him the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1979, the Academy declared that Elytis’ poetry ‘depicts with sensual strength and intellectual clear sightedness, modern man’s struggle for freedom and creativity’. The poet responded that he wished his award to honour the long tradition of Greek poetry, ever since the time of Homer.
