On behalf of the Advisory Board and the Academic Committee, we would like to inform you of an international conference and invite you to submit an abstract.

9th International Conference on Greek Research

The conference will be held at Flinders University, located in Adelaide, South Australia, on 30 June – 3 July 2011

The 9th International Conference on Greek Research is a 4-day event where research papers will be presented on the studies related to Greek and Cypriot themes.

A vibrant program will be dedicated to papers and posters relating to Greek and Cypriot studies that will continue the tradition of the international conferences on Greek Research and will include the following areas of research:

  • Ancient Greek Philosophy
  • Classical Studies
  • Cyprus from 1960-2011: 51 years later
  • History and Migration
  • Literature and Language
  • Society and culture

An Ageing in the Migrant Diaspora conference will also be an important part of the 9th International Conference on Greek Research and will address the needs of the migrant Diaspora with regard to ageing and health, service provision and cultural identity issues of Greek and other Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) communities in Australia and overseas. Attendance is welcomed from academics, researchers, practitioners, policy makers and aged care providers. We are particularly (but not exclusively) seeking papers and posters on:

  • Ageing experiences of first generation migrants
  • Experiences of ageing among the Hellenic Diaspora
  • Health, aged care and social services for older people from NESB*
  • Service access and equity issues
  • Meanings of culture in CALD** ageing
  • Intergenerational support and the role of family care
  • Policy and practice issues for those working with ageing CALD communities

* NESB – Non English-Speaking Background; ** CALD – Culturally and Linguistically Diverse

The Ageing in the Migrant Diaspora conference is hosted by the Modern Greek section of the Department of Language Studies and the Southgate Institute for Health, Society and Equity, both at Flinders University. The Southgate Institute is a national centre for research into the social and economic determinants of health and wellbeing.

The 9th International Conference on Greek Research is hosted by the Modern Greek section of the Department of Language Studies, Flinders University.

ABSTRACT: Please submit abstract (up to 200 words) using the on-line Abstract form available on the Conference website http://www.flinders.edu.au/ehlt/conferences/greek/research2011/call-for-papers/call-for-papers_home.cfm

CALL FOR PAPERS: All abstracts should be received by 28 February 2011, however early submissions are encouraged as the number of presentations is limited.

PRESENTATIONS: Oral presentations – 20 minute papers will be followed by 10 minute discussion time at the end of each session.

Poster presentations – details of sizes will be posted on the conference website.

PROGRAM: Parallel sessions and panel discussions will be scheduled over 4 days and papers will be grouped according to area of research. The preliminary Program will be available on the website as soon as possible. It is expected that papers on Ageing will be scheduled on Friday to Sunday, 1st – 3rd July 2011. Professional Development seminars for teachers of Modern Greek and teachers of Philosophy will be included in the conference program.

CONFERENCE DINNER: The conference dinner will be held on Sunday, 3 July 2011 at the Adelaide Pavilion, overlooking the spectacular garden surroundings of Veale Gardens. All welcome.

CONFERENCE LANGUAGES: Greek and English

DAY TOUR: South Australia is rich in the Arts, well known for its culture and famous for its wines. The day tour will have a unique blend of all these three areas for delegates to experience and shall take place on Monday 4th July 2011.

LOCATION: Flinders University, located in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia.

PUBLIC EVENTS: An exciting array of public lectures, book launch and other events will be presented free of charge in June – July 2011, before and during the conference, for delegates and the general public.

REGISTRATION for all presenters and attendees, regardless of which component of the conference you interested in, Ageing / Greek studies / or both. Conference registration entitles delegates to attend any session listed on the conference program which is of interest to them.
