WORKSHOP:

Historical Time and Neohellenic Enlightenment in the Islands of the Ionian Sea (Heptanese)

Organizer/Moderator: Prof. George Leontsinis (University of Athens)

This workshop aims to make a multiple approach to the historical time –which is divided into successive sub-periods– in the context of which the movement of the Enlightenment takes place in the Ionian Islands, also called “Heptanese” since 1800 onwards. During the period of the Neohellenic Enlightenment, the Ionian Islands were under successive Western Sovereignties *under the Venetians until 1797, under the “Democratic French” (1797-1799), under the Russians and Turks (1799-1807), under the “Imperial French” (1797-1799), and under the British (1815-1864)]. This workshop will examine the historicity of the time-period of the Enlightenment in the Islands of the Ionian Sea, in the context of the European Sovereignties conjunction and of the inherited dynamics of this historical area. The Neohellenic Enlightenment (especially in its final phase, 1774-1821) will also be considered as a determining period of the “Heptanesian Culture” and of its political aftermath.

In particular, the workshop participants are called to formulate their papers in the context of the social, political, and cultural procedures that took place during the period of the Neohellenic Enlightenment and led to the end of the ancient regime in the Ionian Islands (1780-1815c.).They can also trace the rhetoric that was developed in that area by the enthusiastic reception of the ideas of the French Revolution and of the principles of the European Enlightenment that enabled the various forms of revolutionary activities by a great part of the islanders. The various Western European ideological influences –along with the inherent local intellectual activity and the ideas and practices of attempted change by the islanders– became obvious by the fundamental changes in the substructure of the political administration as well as that of Ionian society. This political and social mobility of the residents –as well as the reactions of a conservative part of the society towards these changes– are possible to be examined through the official and other documents of the Foreign Administrations, the writings of local intellectuals, chronicles, political manifestos, private and administrative correspondence, revolutionary documents composed by individuals and organized social groups seeking change in the institutions and the local administration. It is important also to examine the dynamics of that period (the last phase of the Neohellenic Enlightenment, 1774-1821) over which new cultural identities are originated and devised in this particular geographical area (“Ionian” and “Heptanesian” identity).

Papers are invited that respond to these and related questions. Please, direct informal expressions of interest or queries to Prof. George Leontsinis (gleon@primedu.uoa.gr)
