The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Departments of Classical Studies and Comparative Literature have been authorized to make an appointment in Modern Greek Studies (C. P. Cavafy Endowed Chair) at the tenured level (Associate Professor or Full Professor) beginning September 1, 2018.

MODERN GREEK STUDIES. The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Departments of Classical Studies and Comparative Literature have been authorized to make an appointment in Modern Greek Studies (C. P. Cavafy Endowed Chair) at the tenured level (Associate Professor or Full Professor) beginning September 1, 2018.

 

The candidate should be qualified to teach Modern Greek language and culture and comparative literature and to fully participate in the activities of both departments. Expertise may range from literature, theory, and cultural studies to studies in performance, film and new media, translation, visual culture, heritage, and classical receptions. Preference will be given to candidates whose published work indicates cross-disciplinary links between Modern Greek and wider geographical contexts such as the Mediterranean, Balkans, Middle East, and diasporic communities worldwide. The person who fills this position will hold an endowed chair (C. P. Cavafy Chair) with a joint appointment in Classical Studies and Comparative Literature, and become the Director of the Program in Modern Greek Studies.

 

Evidence of excellence in teaching and research will be the principal selection criteria. In addition, demonstrated leadership or a high level of interest in program building and development are needed. The candidate will be expected to oversee the Modern Greek program in its curricular, scholarly, and outreach activities; to contribute to course offerings in both departments; to advise undergraduates and supervise graduate students in the relevant fields; and to work with donors, including the group that endowed the C. P. Cavafy Chair. Qualifications: A Ph.D. degree or equivalent and the publication record of a tenured professor at a research university. This is a university-year appointment with an expected start date of September 1, 2018.
